The Modern University, a look into Dutch institutions educational innovation

21st November 2018

The ability to measure the impact of innovation is essential to every improvement strategy. For educational organisations, knowing whether a change of practice in the classroom is making a difference is crucial.  How pedagogical resources are being used and developed, and to what extent change can be linked to improvements provides critical knowledge.

In the Netherlands particularly, there has been a significant increase in innovative approaches. Dutch institutions looking to modernise the HE experience allow students to gain early access to cutting-edge learning techniques. Advantages to the universities for doing this include an increase in student and staff engagement and increasing retention figures.

To remain competitive and attractive to international and domestic students, there is a need for the management, development, and invention of systems to drive the modern university.

The role of technology is to facilitate, through increased efficiency and effectiveness, the education of knowledge and skills. Ultimately, technology should serve to increase student achievement in any educational institution.

Technology can remove physical barriers and this allows academics greater accessibility in their professional development and graduate education. Before the age of the internet and the advent of distance learning, engaging in a learning community, such as a workplace network or a school, required a close degree of physical proximity amongst community members.

In the present and future, there are a large number of examples of how modern learning techniques such as a Digital Campus can vastly improve not just an institutions efficiency and success, but the city it is situated in.
